In Hungary, peaches are considered to be the "fruit of calmness". It is believed that the natural sedative present in peaches may help relieve stress, anxiety and even help promote sound sleep. In China, they are a symbol of good luck, protection and longevity.
Other than being juicy and delicious, peaches have wonderful nutritional benefits. They are a rich source of antioxidants, as they may help prevent cancer and promote heart health. Their low glycemic index make them excellent for diabetics. They help keep the skin healthy - their high content of vitamin A and C make them a natural moisturizer. Their good levels of calcium and magnesium help support bones and the nervous system and they can also be the perfect snack for losing weight as their fibre content makes us feel full and keeps us from overeating.
Peach season is at its peak in July and August although, if we're lucky, they could be available as early as end of May. When buying peaches, make sure to always choose organic. This is one tree fruit that makes the Dirty Dozen list every year due to its high levels of pesticide residue.
So, KEEP CALM AND HAVE A PEACH!
